How to Select the Perfect Wedding Dress For Your Body

Brides come in all shapes and sizes, but finding the perfect wedding dress for your body type can be a challenge if you go into it without a plan. Here’s a quick tutorial that will help you streamline your shopping. Start by determining your body shape, and then head for the bridal salon armed with information and ready to pull something off the rack that’s perfect!

Look for: A classic A-line silhouette that flares out from your natural waist to the floor, which will help your midsection look smaller. When it comes to fabrics, sturdier fabrics like duchesse satin and taffeta won’t cling to you, and spaghetti-straps or a V neckline will showcase a more slender upper body.

Look for: If you’re busty, try to find a dress with a scooped neckline. This will help open up your face and display your décolletage without showing too much cleavage. If you’re set on strapless, look for a gown with a sweetheart neckline versus something that goes straight across.

Look for: For plus-sized brides, dresses with an empire waist are very flattering. These are dresses with a skirt that begins just under the bust and flows into a gradual floor-length A-line. Look for something plain without any pleating of the fabric, as this will look too much like a maternity dress, and choose a dress with structure to give you shape.

Keep in mind: Find fabrics like satin that provide structure, rather than anything too flowy. If you love the romantic look of airier fabrics, choose a gown with a stiffer base, then add an embroidered tulle overlay.

Look for: If you’re statuesque, a wedding dress with a simple silhouette is all you need. Your dress will need to complement your natural shape, so the waist should be lower, the hem longer, etc… If you’re planning on a long-sleeved dress, choose something with sleeves that go past your wrists.

Look for: For smaller-framed brides, trumpet, sheath, and modified A-line gowns are perfect! Look for a dress with a waistline that is higher than your natural waist, which will give the illusion that you are taller. And when it comes to detailing, keep it simple so as not to call attention to your size.
